Day 12 - Motor Skillz

I don't have any new photos to post, but I am working on getting a video of them "walking." This was something I noticed for the first time yesterday - they are moving around like champs.

Puppies when born are basically just bopping around. According to one of two books I am using to supplement my puppy raising (they are "Breeding a Litter," by Beth J Finder Harris, and "Training and Working Dogs" by Scott Lithgow), puppies are only born with a sense of touch at first. By day ten, their olfactory nerves start working and they can use scent. Which totally explains why they are now locomotive champions when they are looking for nipples and easily cruise around Fury if they get stuck behind her. You can also hear them smelling -- sniff sniff sniff.

All that shucking around, however, has them trying to stand and walk now. It's very cute. Reid's probably the most dexterous of the litter. I don't think people give him enough attention, Yishai saw him and was like, "I think that dog is going to be one heck of a working dog," and I tend to agree. He's feisty, and he's super agile already.

Moto remains ENORMOUS. I swear, I would not be surprised if he weighed double what everyone else does. So the question remains: is he just big in a litter of normal pups, or is he normal in a litter of little Fury midget pups?

And if anyone was watching puppy cam last night, you noticed that for a good chunk of time, we had six people in the house, each with a puppy, while we socialized. Two were total strangers and the Fury handled it like a champ. I think we'll be open for puppy socialization business starting this weekend.

Taking Fury on a field trip to the beach today - she needs breaks away from her doglets now - sometimes she looks so forlorn about having to let them nurse. I was worried about how I would wean, but methinks Fury is just going to do it for me. I have to go out to Morro Bay to pick up another ex-pen and a donation of fancy, fancy Solid Gold puppy food from my old boss and friend, Doug MacDonald today. I think she'll get to come along.
